In the last year, more than 20 police officers from Georgia have been disciplined, fired, and even criminally charged for misuse of Flock Safety’s national database of license plate readers for personal reasons. According to investigations by Atlanta News First, the cases include allegations that officers tracked former romantic partners, spouses, acquaintances, and other individuals with no legitimate law enforcement purpose.

The most recent case is the arrest of three deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office this week for accessing the database inappropriately. These cases are part of a number of cases involving officers in the state of Georgia who have misused the technology in one of the fastest-growing surveillance technologies.

The Flock Safety system is one of the largest license plate recognition (LPR) networks in the nation. Numerous cameras operated by police forces, communities, companies, and municipalities capture images of moving vehicles, including license plates.

According to its proponents, when applied correctly, the technology has helped police recover stolen cars, locate missing persons, and solve cases of violent crime by identifying suspects. However, the same technology also produces a vast database that can tell us where people go, where they live, where they work, and whom they visit.

When access to that information is abused, it can become an extraordinarily powerful stalking tool. To be clear, I personally do not support anything mass surveillance related period, but for the sake of this article, I wrote the argument both sides make in support of Flock AI cameras getting installed across the US.

Faced with this problem, Flock Safety recently developed a new auditing system utilizing artificial intelligence technology. Instead of having supervisors manually check thousands of searches performed in the database, this system analyzes officers' activity and flags searches that seem to contradict the police department's policies.

Civil liberties supporters, on the other hand, point out that the latest arrests show more than just that the mechanisms function… they are concerned about recent changes to Flock's transparency policy, since the company started deleting officers’ names from its publicly available audit logs and replacing them with anonymous identification numbers.

Flock notes that the changes were implemented following warnings from law enforcement agencies that activists were using the public audit documents to identify undercover police officers. The critics argue that by limiting information, it is harder for journalists and watchdog organizations to expose any misconduct.

In at least two known cases, including one in Georgia, people discovered officers had allegedly searched for their vehicle information through public audit records compiled by the transparency website HaveIBeenFlocked.com. Without detailed audit information, similar abuses could become harder for the public to detect.

These Georgia cases reflect a much bigger problem associated with modern surveillance technologies. License plate readers have been proliferating across the U.S. and now generate billions of scans annually. Advocates believe they are highly useful for investigation purposes and can help identify criminals and even find lost individuals; however, every time access to the information expands, the potential impact of such misuse only grows.

The current trend of abuse proves the need not only to trust people, but also to have proper control over surveillance systems, independent auditing, and transparency.

A technology capable of tracking down a criminal is also capable of stalking a civilian. Most of the people who have to bear the brunt of the use of such surveillance technology in a predatory manner are women.

The two soldiers, a combat soldier and an intelligence officer, were both women, according to Haaretz. Israeli Military Police have opened investigations into both deaths, and the newspaper also reports that at least nine former soldiers have died by suicide after completing their military service this year.

The latest cases follow a sharp rise in military suicides over the past two years. Haaretz previously reported that 21 active-duty Israeli soldiers died by suicide in 2024, with 22 more in 2025, the highest annual totals the military has recorded in roughly 15 years.

Mental health professionals have linked the increase to repeated combat deployments following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack and Israel’s prolonged military campaign in Gaza. Israeli commanders have acknowledged that the realities of war have played a significant role in the crisis.

The psychological impact extends far beyond suicide statistics. Reuters reported earlier this year that the IDF has seen a nearly 40% increase in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among soldiers since late 2023. According to Israeli officials cited by Reuters, roughly 60% of the more than 22,000 service members receiving treatment for physical war injuries are also experiencing PTSD. An Israeli parliamentary committee also found that 279 soldiers attempted suicide between January 2024 and July 2025.

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court have rightfully accused senior Israeli leaders of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, while South Africa’s case before the International Court of Justice alleges that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Israel rejects those allegations and argues it is conducting a lawful military campaign against Hamas following the October 7 attacks.

The humanitarian toll inside Gaza has been catastrophic, with tens of thousands of Palestinians killed, according to Gaza health authorities, while humanitarian organizations have documented widespread destruction, repeated displacement, and severe shortages of food, medicine, and clean water. International human rights organizations have also documented allegations of unlawful killings, torture, and abuse that remain under investigation.

Psychologists say prolonged exposure to violence can produce what is often called “moral injury,” the profound psychological distress that can occur when someone witnesses, participates in, or believes they have violated deeply held moral values. While that concept does not diminish accountability for potential war crimes, experts say it helps explain why many soldiers experience lasting trauma long after combat ends.

As the war approaches its third year, Israel continues to grapple not only with the human cost borne by civilians in Gaza, but also with a mounting mental health crisis among the soldiers fighting the conflict.

Lux Claridge, a physics teacher at Emporia High School, was arrested during an Emporia City Commission meeting on July 22 after expressing support for speakers opposing the proposed Flint Hills Digital Campus data center. According to Emporia police, commissioners had warned attendees that disruptive behavior, including clapping, wouldn’t be permitted during the meeting.

Police say Claridge continued applauding despite the warnings and refused to leave when officers instructed him to exit. Officers ultimately carried him out of the meeting before arresting him on charges of disorderly conduct and interference with law enforcement, and he was later booked into the Lyon County Jail and released after posting bail.

Speaking to local television station KWCH after his release, Claridge said the arrest would not discourage him from continuing to speak out.

“I’m glad to be out, but this is an inconvenience, really. It’s not really deterring me from speaking out or, I guess, clapping.”

Claridge has said he plans to plead not guilty when he appears in court in September. Video from the meeting shows Claridge telling officers to “drag me out” before they physically removed him from the commission chambers. His wife, Jessica Danford, who attended the hearing alongside him, said watching the arrest was difficult.

The confrontation comes as opposition to large-scale AI infrastructure projects continues to grow across the nation. Communities have increasingly raised concerns about the enormous electricity and water demands of data centers, their environmental impacts, land use, and the lack of local input before projects are approved. Across several states, residents have organized protests and called for moratoriums on new AI data center construction while governments weigh the economic benefits against community concerns.

Following Claridge’s arrest, another resident who attended the meeting told local media they worried the incident could discourage people from participating in public meetings and exercising what they believe are their First Amendment rights. Emporia police defended their actions, saying public meetings must remain orderly while emphasizing that Claridge is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The case now raises broader questions about where governments draw the line between maintaining order during public meetings and protecting citizens’ right to express support or opposition during civic proceedings. Claridge’s September court appearance could become an early test of those competing interests as debates over AI infrastructure continue to intensify nationwide.

Guatemalan authorities say 43-year-old Nixon Giovanni Pérez Paz and 25-year-old Glendy Marisol González de la Cruz were discovered dead after they disappeared while traveling to register a motorcycle. Their 14-month-old daughter was found alive beside her mother’s body, severely dehydrated but conscious, she is currently receiving medical treatment.

The couple had previously lived in Overland, Missouri, after leaving Guatemala in search of safety and economic opportunity. According to reporting from St. Louis Public Radio, Pérez Paz was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in March 2025 while traveling to work with his brother. Both men were living in the United States without legal status, and Pérez Paz was later deported to Guatemala.

His wife remained in Missouri with their children while pursuing an asylum case, but after months of financial hardship and growing fears that she, too, could be detained, González de la Cruz made the difficult decision to return to Guatemala with their daughters so the family could be together again.

Only weeks after reuniting, the couple vanished.

Family members reported them missing on July 20 after they failed to return home from an errand. Authorities later found their bodies in a sugar cane field. Investigators in Guatemala have not publicly identified any suspects or announced a motive, and the killings remain under investigation.

The deaths have sparked outrage among immigrant rights advocates, who argue the case illustrates the dangers some deported families face after being forced to return to countries they fled.

The family’s tragedy has also reignited debate over U.S. immigration policy. While immigration enforcement officials argue deportations are necessary to uphold federal law and protect public safety, advocates say cases like this underscore the life-threatening risks some migrants face after being returned to countries plagued by violence, instability, and poverty.

As of publication, ICE has not publicly commented on the deaths, and Guatemalan prosecutors continue to investigate the killings.

A community vigil honoring Pérez Paz and González de la Cruz is scheduled to take place on August 2 in Overland, Missouri, where the family had built their life before returning to Guatemala.

Every year, thousands of people flee their home countries to escape gang violence, political persecution, religious persecution, domestic abuse, and other credible threats to their lives. Under both U.S. and international law, people who arrive at the U.S. border have the legal right to seek asylum if they fear persecution in their home country. Since returning to office, President Donald Trump has dramatically restricted access to asylum through executive actions, border policies, and expanded deportations, making it significantly more difficult for many migrants to present their claims.

While the investigation into this family’s murders is ongoing and there is no evidence U.S. officials were involved in their deaths, their story has become a painful reminder of the risks some deported migrants face after being forced to return to the very places they believed were too dangerous to stay.

Nearly a month later, the 56-year-old Catholic nun is speaking publicly for the first time about what happened.

“Honestly, in that moment, I did not understand what was going on, what was happening to me,” Ugboaja said during a Thursday press conference.

Ugboaja, a registered nurse originally from Nigeria, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on June 28 while walking to Our Lady of Sorrows Church near the U.S.-Mexico border. She was released several hours later after parish leaders publicized her detention and members of Congress intervened on her behalf, but despite her release, Ugboaja says the experience reflects something much larger than her own case.

“There are many others in this same situation,” she said, referring to immigrants who have been granted legal protections in the United States yet continue living with uncertainty about whether they could be detained.

According to her attorney, Carlos Garcia, an immigration judge denied Ugboaja’s asylum application in 2019 but granted her protection from removal after determining she would likely face torture if returned to Nigeria. Since then, Garcia says she has complied with every requirement imposed by immigration authorities, maintained legal work authorization, and built a life serving her community as both a nurse and a Catholic sister.

Garcia also alleges ICE intended to deport Ugboaja to a third country rather than Nigeria, a practice that has expanded under the Trump administration and has drawn legal challenges from immigration attorneys and human rights organizations. Supporters of the policy argue it helps manage immigration backlogs, while critics say it raises serious due process and humanitarian concerns.

For Ugboaja, one of the most painful parts of the ordeal had nothing to do with the hours she spent in custody; it was her repeatedly asking officers if she could simply attend Mass before being taken into detention… the answer, she says, was no.

“For me, a nun, not to go to Mass on Sunday, not to receive Communion, it was very, very heartbreaking for me.”

The case has become one of the latest flashpoints in the Trump administration’s expanded immigration enforcement campaign, which has increasingly swept up individuals who are living in the United States under humanitarian protections or while complying with ongoing immigration proceedings. Ugboaja remains scheduled to report to ICE again next week, and her long-term future in the country remains uncertain.

A Republican state lawmaker in West Virginia has been arrested after federal investigators accused him of using social media platforms to groom and sexually abuse a teenage student at the school where he worked as a teacher. Delegate David Elliott Pritt, 36, was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with coercion and enticement of a minor and third-degree sexual assault, according to a federal criminal complaint.

Pritt was not only a classroom teacher but also an elected member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, serving as the chamber’s assistant majority leader, placing him in two separate positions of authority over the public and the children in his care. The allegations outlined by federal investigators are deeply disturbing, and according to the complaint, the family of a 15-year-old girl contacted law enforcement on July 9. A two-week investigation led by Homeland Security Investigations allegedly uncovered a lengthy pattern of communication between Pritt and the teenager.

Investigators say the contact began sometime between late 2024 and early 2025, when the girl was an eighth-grade student at the middle school where Pritt taught. The complaint alleges that Pritt initially communicated with the child through Roblox, an online gaming platform widely used by children, before moving their conversations to Snapchat, where messages and images can disappear after being viewed.

Over time, investigators allege that the conversations became increasingly personal and by the end of the student’s eighth-grade year, Pritt had allegedly told her that he loved her. During the summer of 2025, the complaint alleges that Pritt began sending the child sexually explicit photographs and videos of himself and asking her to send similar material in return.

Pritt later began teaching at a West Virginia high school in the fall of 2025, and federal investigators allege that he asked the teenager to come to the school and perform sexual acts. According to the complaint, the child was allegedly subjected to sexual activity inside Pritt’s classroom on approximately five to 10 occasions, and the alleged encounters continued until January.

The complaint states that Pritt remained in contact with the teenager on Snapchat until July, and investigators also allege that Pritt warned the child not to tell anyone about what had happened. In one alleged exchange, Pritt told her that state police could arrive, confiscate their phones and “open up hell in our lives.” He also allegedly said, “I would lose my entire life.”

That statement reveals a familiar dynamic in alleged abuse cases involving adults in positions of authority: the adult centers the consequences they could face rather than the harm allegedly inflicted on the child. The burden of secrecy is placed on the minor, and the child is made to feel responsible for the adult’s job, marriage, family, reputation or freedom, but a child is never responsible for protecting an adult from the consequences of that adult’s conduct.

Pritt is reportedly married and has four children.

Following his arrest, West Virginia House Speaker Roger Hanshaw called on Pritt to resign and announced that he had been removed from all official legislative roles.

The school district must now face serious questions about whether there were warning signs, whether proper safeguards were in place and how an adult accused of exploiting a student was allegedly able to use school property for repeated sexual encounters. The case also raises concerns about the ways adults may use child-centered online spaces to gain access to minors.

This case is ultimately not only about one politician or one teacher… it is about the dangers created when an adult holds multiple forms of authority and allegedly uses that trust to exploit a child. Teachers are entrusted with children’s safety, and lawmakers are entrusted with the public’s confidence. When a person occupies both roles, the standard of conduct should be especially high.

Children should never be expected to protect the reputations of powerful adults, and the institutions must protect children instead.

If federal officials believed these men were involved with child sexual abuse materials, why were they deported instead of prosecuted?

In April, federal agents arrested cruise ship crew members during an operation at the Port of San Diego targeting individuals suspected of involvement with child sexual abuse materials. According to Customs and Border Protection, 27 people were arrested and deported… most of them Filipino nationals. The agency said officers determined the individuals were involved in the receipt, possession, transportation, distribution, or viewing of child sexual abuse material.

Those are extraordinarily serious allegations, and ordinarily, cases involving child sexual abuse material are investigated by the FBI and prosecuted in federal court, where evidence is presented, defendants face trial, and, if convicted, offenders receive lengthy prison sentences. But that is not what happened here.

Instead, within days of their arrests, the suspects were deported, and neither Immigration and Customs Enforcement nor Customs and Border Protection has released any charging documents, arrest warrants, or evidence to support the allegations. Federal prosecutors in both the Southern District of California and the Central District of California told KPBS they have no pending criminal cases connected to the operation. Local port police likewise reported they were not involved.

That leaves the public with a troubling contradiction: if the evidence was strong enough for the government to publicly accuse these individuals of involvement with child sexual abuse materials, why wasn’t it strong enough to bring criminal charges in a U.S. court?

And if prosecutors believed the evidence was insufficient to file charges, why were officials publicly labeling them as participants in one of the most reviled crimes imaginable before deporting them?

Legal experts say the government’s approach is highly unusual; maritime attorney Michael Winkleman noted that suspects in these types of cases are typically prosecuted in federal court rather than immediately removed from the country.

The decision matters because deportation isn’t the same thing as accountability. When someone accused of a serious crime is removed from the United States before prosecution, American courts lose jurisdiction, investigators may lose access to critical witnesses or evidence, and any potential victims are denied the opportunity to see justice carried out through the legal system.

That outcome appears fundamentally at odds with the administration’s repeated claims that protecting children is one of its highest priorities, and the contradiction becomes even more striking when compared to how this administration has exercised its immigration powers in other contexts.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended revoking visas for students who participated in protests over Israel’s war in Gaza by arguing that visas are a privilege, not a right. The administration has also aggressively deported immigrants accused of gang affiliation, sometimes before allegations were fully tested in court.

Yet in this case, where officials themselves described conduct involving child sexual abuse material, the government’s response was not prosecution but removal from the country.

If the allegations are true, the public deserves to know why these suspects were not prosecuted in federal court.

If the allegations cannot be substantiated, the public deserves to know why federal agencies publicly associated these individuals with crimes as serious as child sexual abuse material before any criminal case was filed.

Protecting children requires more than press releases and headlines. It requires thorough investigations, due process, criminal accountability where the evidence supports it, and transparency that allows the public to understand why such extraordinary decisions were made.

The demonstration comes as the Trump administration has quietly suspended most ICE vehicle stops following two fatal shootings involving ICE officers in just over a week.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, officers were conducting surveillance of a residence associated with an individual with a final order of removal when they attempted to stop a vehicle leaving the property. ICE claims Durán Guerrero tried to flee, prompting an officer to open fire out of concern for public safety. Clear video footage that has been shared widely on social media proves their statements to be a lie, as they visibly shot him while he was sitting in his car and then dragged his body onto the ground to handcuff his lifeless body.

However, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain disputed by the government, as accounts provided to lawmakers suggested the officer fired after Durán Guerrero allegedly attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon. This is a claim they made with Renee Good as well, the woman they shot and killed in Minneapolis, whose video footage proved to show that claim to be false, as she was actively driving away when ICE fatally shot Good.

Advocacy groups say Durán Guerrero was authorized to work in the United States and had a Social Security number. He leaves behind a wife and young daughter.

The FBI, along with the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General, is investigating the shooting, and Maine’s congressional delegation has called for a comprehensive, transparent, and expedited investigation.

ICE has become an agency with extraordinary power and far too little accountability, and as its authority has expanded, so too have reports of aggressive enforcement tactics, warrantless operations, family separations, and now repeated fatal shootings. The Trump administration’s decision to suspend most vehicle stops isn’t a sign that the agency is policing itself; it’s an acknowledgment that its tactics have become impossible to ignore.

When an agency can stop, detain, and kill with limited transparency and little public oversight, it ceases to function as a force accountable to the communities it polices. Every escalation in ICE’s power has been accompanied by fewer safeguards for the people caught in its path.

Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero should still be alive, and his death is not an isolated tragedy. It is part of a broader pattern of an immigration enforcement system that has grown increasingly emboldened, increasingly militarized, and increasingly willing to use deadly force. Accountability cannot end with investigations; it requires confronting the unchecked power that made these deaths possible in the first place.

The man, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was killed Tuesday during what ICE described as a “targeted enforcement operation.” According to his family, Salgado Araujo had been in the area searching for workers to hire when federal agents opened fire.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the killing and said her administration intends to pursue legal action beyond the diplomatic protests Mexico has already filed with international human rights organizations.

“Our objective is to go beyond diplomatic notes,” Sheinbaum said.

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry is now preparing legal proceedings in U.S. courts while continuing to challenge what it describes as a pattern of abuse against Mexican migrants.

The shooting has become another flashpoint in the increasingly strained relationship between Mexico and the Trump administration over immigration enforcement. While both governments continue to cooperate on trade, border security, and migration, Mexican officials argue that repeated diplomatic complaints have failed to stop violence against their citizens living in the United States.

“They do respond, but nevertheless there is another regrettable death of a Mexican national in the United States,” Sheinbaum said. “Their only offense is not having papers.”

Her comments raise a broader question: should a civil immigration violation ever result in the use of deadly force? My answer? NO.

In Houston, immigrant rights advocates and civil rights organizations are demanding a full, independent investigation into the shooting. They argue that the public deserves a transparent accounting of what happened and why federal agents resorted to lethal force.

The Department of Homeland Security has launched an internal review of the incident, while the FBI is investigating the alleged assault of a federal officer connected to the operation. Houston Mayor John Whitmire has declined to initiate a separate city investigation, saying local authorities cannot conduct one while the federal investigation remains active. Just weeks after the United States and Iran agreed to a temporary ceasefire, President Donald Trump announced that, “as far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” and hours later, the U.S. military launched another wave of strikes inside Iran.

According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were carried out in retaliation for Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials, however, argue the United States violated the ceasefire first by challenging the agreement governing security in the strategic waterway. Whatever version of events ultimately proves correct, one fact is undeniable: diplomacy is rapidly being replaced by military escalation.

Throughout the day, Trump repeatedly signaled that more strikes were coming; while speaking at the NATO summit, he dismissed ongoing negotiations as “a waste of time,” referred to Iranian leaders with inflammatory language, and suggested additional military action was likely.

Soon afterward, explosions were reported across multiple Iranian cities, including Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, and Konarak. Bushehr is particularly significant, as it is home to Iran’s only civilian nuclear power plant and is located near Kharg Island, through which the overwhelming majority of Iran’s oil exports pass.

Much of this latest escalation centers on the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow stretch of water connecting the Persian Gulf to the rest of the world, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil passes.

When conflict erupts there, the consequences are felt everywhere: oil prices surged almost immediately following Trump’s remarks, while stock markets fell amid fears that a prolonged conflict could disrupt global energy supplies and destabilize the broader economy.

We’ve Seen This Before

For decades, Americans have been told that military force will bring stability to the Middle East, but instead, we’ve witnessed generations shaped by invasion, sanctions, proxy wars, displacement, and unimaginable human suffering.

The United States has spent trillions of dollars on war while millions of Americans struggle to afford healthcare, housing, education, and food. Meanwhile, families across the Middle East continue to pay with their homes, their livelihoods, and, far too often, their lives.

Diplomatic efforts now appear increasingly uncertain, although some negotiations technically remain open; Trump’s public declaration that the ceasefire is effectively “over” has significantly undermined confidence that the current agreement can survive.

Whether diplomacy can still prevent a wider regional conflict remains one of the most urgent questions facing the international community. My best guess? Trump cannot afford this, and he will feel the wrath of his war escalations when he loses the House and Senate in the midterms. Andrea Shaw was arrested on June 29 following a lengthy investigation into the May 2025 deaths of her twin son and daughter. Prosecutors secured terrorism-related convictions against people who did not fire a weapon, some of whom were not accused of planning the shooting, and at least one person who was not even at the protest.

The punishment handed down to these protesters is longer than the harshest sentences given to far-right leaders involved in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Enrique Tarrio, the former Proud Boys leader convicted of seditious conspiracy, was sentenced to 22 years, and Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the Oath Keepers, received 18 years. The message being sent is clear: protest against state violence, ICE, and the carceral system can be reframed as terrorism, and political beliefs can be used as evidence. An association can become a conspiracy, reading material can become ideology, encrypted messaging can become suspicious, and proximity to one person’s violent act can become the basis for decades in prison.
