The video, published by the semi-official Iranian outlet Mehr News, appears to show a missile striking an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval base in Minab on February 28. The footage was reportedly filmed from a nearby construction site and captures what weapons experts say closely resembles a U.S. Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) impacting inside the military compound.

Moments later, as the camera pans across the horizon, a massive plume of smoke rises from the direction of the nearby Shajareh Tayyiba elementary school, the same school where Iranian state and international media say at least 168 children and 14 teachers were killed in the strike.

The emerging evidence complicates claims made by President Donald Trump, who told reporters that Iran itself was responsible for the attack. This was a claim that many right-wing Iranian pundits also peddled, originating from a Telegram group chat and then spreading from there.

“Based on what I’ve seen, that was done by Iran,” Trump said Saturday, describing Iranian munitions as “very inaccurate.”

However, the administration has stopped short of formally assigning blame. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the incident remains under investigation, though he reiterated that “the only side that targets civilians is Iran.” The Pentagon has also declined to comment on whether U.S. forces deployed Tomahawk missiles during the strike.

Weapons analysts who reviewed the footage say the munition visible in the video matches the shape and flight profile of a U.S. Tomahawk cruise missile, a weapon that is launched from American naval ships and submarines.

Sam Lair, a research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, told CNN the missile’s cruciform wing shape and tail configuration are consistent with a Tomahawk. “The munition appears large enough that it rules out other U.S. weapons with similar visual features,” Lair explained. “And given the proximity of the camera, roughly 250 meters from the impact, the size of the projectile is a key indicator.”

In the past 48 hours, I have felt a range of emotions. Happy that the Supreme Leader who murdered thousands of Iranians who opposed his government is dead. Mortified at the fact that my ancestral homeland is getting carpet bombed. Upset at my own diaspora for immediately reverting to dancing and celebrating America’s attack, without weighing out the greater implications of what this will look like in the coming weeks.

I always found myself to be a black sheep within the Iranian diaspora. I grew up in California, and I was poor for most of my life after elementary school. Many of the Iranian kids I grew up with were rich and had abundant familial support. I only had my immediate family close to me. I was born and raised in America, but I lived in Iran in middle school and went to school there.

I grew up with a leftist father, who taught me about the plight of the Palestinian people from the moment I learned how to take in information that he told me. I grew up watching the war on terror unfold with him, and that’s what actually inspired me to become a journalist. The household I grew up in was very different than the average Iranian diaspora experience, as many of the diaspora tend to have a lot of money and usually adhere to conservative political ideology.

As I watched my diaspora take to the streets and celebrate the death of the brutal dictator Khamenei, I couldn’t help but mourn the future of what my country holds. I have studied the war on terror and America’s actions specifically in the Middle East for most of my life. I know how this play will unfold and end. None of the scenarios is good either.

I scroll through my hundreds of DMs, and see a plethora of Iranian people cussing me out and asking me how dare I oppose America’s invasion of Iran. How dare I tell Iranians to feel, how dare I question the greater implications that this war has for my people. I’ve come to realize that my own diaspora has had to deal with a lot of government and religious trauma. Unfortunately, instead of going to therapy, they just decide to go off on people like me 24/7.

To be honest, I can’t blame my fellow Iranians for the way they are reacting. I think to the average American, we look deranged for dancing in the streets and celebrating the carpet bombing of our own country, but then I look back to the 12-year-old version of me who lived under the IRGC dictatorship, and I remember how she tried to end her own life after just a year of experiencing it. The subjugation, constant fear of arrest, forced religion, and everything in between left my Western brain confused and depressed. I was lucky enough to have a father who recognized how serious my mental health issues had become, brought me back to America, and immediately put me into therapy.

He saw what I didn’t at the time, a young girl who just endured living in a religious dictatorship that changed my brain chemistry to the point where I didn’t want to live anymore.

That was only after just one year of living in that dictatorship.

But now I am watching historical sites, schools, hospitals, and civilian areas being bombed, and my diaspora continues dancing in the street as a response, and I can’t help but feel bitter at the lack of nuance they seem to hold.

The Iranian government is not like Syria or Venezuela. Taking out the Supreme Leader does nothing; they will just replace him with another hardliner and keep it moving. The IRGC is a religious theocracy, not a government-run organization, circumventing one specific dictator. To take out the IRGC means you’d have to take out every single government official and hardliner. Not to mention that Iran is extremely mountainous, making it extremely geographically tough to just bomb.

It’s almost like thinking the Mexican cartel will be over with by taking out their leader. It’s just simply not how it works.

I dream of a free Iran, I dream of being able to go back and kiss the ground that my ancestors walked on for thousands of years. Sometimes I wish I were born in the early 1900’s, so that I could’ve lived in Iran during its glory days and passed away before any of this even happened.

My people and culture are among the oldest civilizations to walk this planet, a civilization full of vibrant love and resilience. If I could, I would move back to Iran in a heartbeat. My people had the potential to become a global superpower just from their sheer brilliance and education, a potential that America robbed us of.

I am grieving in layers.

According to officials, Border Patrol agents took Shah Alam to the coffee shop shortly after he was released from the Erie County jail on February 19. He was held there for about half a year while facing criminal charges that were eventually resolved with a misdemeanor plea deal.

On Tuesday evening, Buffalo police found his body roughly four miles away from where the agents had left him. While the medical examiner later ruled his death to be health-related, and said that there were no signs of homicide or exposure, investigators say they are still trying to piece together the final days of his life.

A man who was nearly blind, spoke little English, and had no known support with him was left alone on a cold winter night, without his family being told where he was dropped off.

Congressman Tim Kennedy called the death “horrific” and demanded a transparent investigation at the local, state, and federal levels.

Shah Alam was a refugee continuously searching for a home. He arrived in the United States as a refugee in December 2024. His family is Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, part of a persecuted minority that fled widespread violence and what the U.S. has recognized as genocide.

His son told reporters his father’s only wish was simple: to eat home-cooked food and be reunited with his family. Instead, they spent days searching for him.

Whatever the final investigation concludes, one thing is already clear: this didn’t have to end this way. Since 2020, at least two dozen U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees and contractors have been charged with crimes based on a search of public records. Already, seventeen have been convicted. Others have yet to face trial. Yet the crimes ranged from domestic violence to sexual assault of detainees to bribery as well as corruption.

This is happening as ICE has more than doubled in size to 22,000 employees in less than a year, on top of a $75 billion fiscal windfall from new congressional funding.

Among the cases:

• A 20-year ICE veteran and field supervisor in Cincinnati was jailed after being accused of repeatedly abusing and attempting to strangle his girlfriend. A judge described him as “volatile and violent.”

• An ICE contractor in Louisiana admitted to sexually abusing a detainee in custody for over five months.

• A deportation officer in Houston was indicted for allegedly accepting cash bribes to remove immigration detainers.

• An ICE supervisor in New York was charged with providing confidential immigration information in exchange for gifts.

• Two ICE investigators in Utah were sentenced to prison for stealing synthetic drugs from government custody and reselling them.

Other cases involved agents driving drunk with government firearms in their vehicles, threatening to run deputies’ immigration status during arrests, or assaulting protesters while off-duty.

In one particularly disturbing case, a longtime ICE supervisor was arrested in a sting operation after allegedly arranging to pay for sex with someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl while driving a government vehicle and carrying his official badge and firearm. After the arrest, Ringstrom was taken to a federal building and issued a citation under a broad federal statute that criminalizes “assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating or interfering” with federal officers. The law is Title 18, Section 111, and it can carry years in prison, depending on how prosecutors apply it.

The real problem, though, is that she is not an anomaly.

According to an analysis of federal court records, the number of people charged under that statute has more than doubled since last summer, when the Trump administration launched a series of aggressive, city-focused immigration crackdowns. At least 655 people have been prosecuted nationwide under the charge during that period.

In videos posted to Instagram on January 24, armed agents from the Department of Homeland Security chase and aggressively tackle Anthony Paredes, a deaf high school senior wearing a red, green, and white poncho, as he protests. As the agents pin him to the pavement, witnesses can be heard shouting, “He’s deaf! He can’t hear!” and asking the agents to stop the action.

They didn’t.

“He’s disabled, and they took advantage of that,” Paredes wrote in a statement. “They targeted me because I’m deaf.”

What exactly caused the chase remains unknown. The DHS did not respond to media requests for comment. However, Paredes claims he was not the intended target. In his account, the agents were after another woman, a hearing individual, in the same vicinity. The agents apparently changed their focus to him.

The end result was an 18-year-old student tackled by armed federal agents, taken into custody, cited for noncompliance, even though he could not hear the agents’ orders and was never provided with an interpreter during his detention.

According to Paredes, the experience was surreal. When the agents took him into custody, he was not provided with an interpreter. His requests to use the bathroom were ignored. His chest was hurting him after being tackled. He felt like he was all alone, even though he was surrounded by the agents. “I used my phone to communicate,” he wrote. “There were so many people, overlapping noises. I couldn’t understand what was happening.”

Despite the traumatic experience, Paredes has been clear that he will not back down.

On social media, Paredes has been rallying for increased accessibility within the LAUSD and urging the Latinx community and deaf/hard-of-hearing allies to show up at his upcoming court hearing. His court date is scheduled for April 1.

“I’m going to keep showing up,” Paredes wrote. “This needs to stop.”

“The goal is for ICE to melt—and we are fire. We have the power.”
