Donald Trump and Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum have been going back and forth since Trump’s inauguration back in January… And president Sheinbaum is not having it.
On Saturday, she said that she rejected Trump’s offer to send troops into Mexico to “help her administration fight drug trafficking”.

She announced this after the Wall Street Journal published an article detailing a phone call she had last month with Trump. Trump allegedly pressured her to accept a bigger role for the U.S. military to “combat the drug cartels” in Mexico.
“Sovereignty is not for sale. Sovereignty is loved and defended." President Shienbaum
At the same time, across the southern border, Trump has increased U.S. military presence after he ordered in January to up the army’s role in curbing the flow of migrants coming into the country. The U.S. Northern Command has also surged troops and equipment to the border to surveillance flights for fentanyl trafficking as well.
Although Trump designated multiple gangs and cartels smuggling drugs int the US as foreign terrorist organizations on February 19, President Sheinbaum, is not backing down.
She has also stood firmly in front of El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele after he criticized Mexico’s ongoing “security crisis”.
He said “Mexico should be able to solve its violence problem since El Salvador successfully reduced its crime rate by large margins – even though Mexico’s population of 129 million dwarfs El Salvador’s population of six million.” Quick reminder, Trump and Bukele are very close. Trump has sent more than 200 migrants, without due process to the CECOT detention center where they are left to do extreme labor for the rest of their lives and no way out.
In response, Sheinbaum said that she will not enter into a debate with leader Bukele. She also said “The truth is, we could have a whole debate about how the Salvadorans are dealing with crime…we ask for respect for Mexico. Respect is always the hallmark of diplomacy, so have respect for what we do in our country.”
Sheinbaum is the first female president of Mexico and during the 2024 general elections, she garnered more than 57% of the votes. During December, Sheinbaum had a record approval rating of 83%.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has made it clear that Mexico will not be swayed by external pressure, even from powerful allies like the United States.
Her firm stance against Donald Trump’s push for U.S. military intervention, coupled with her diplomatic yet unwavering response to criticism from El Salvador's President Bukele, highlights her commitment to Mexico’s sovereignty and self-determination.
As the country's first female president with strong public support, Sheinbaum is signaling a new era of leadership—one defined by assertiveness on the global stage and a deep respect for national autonomy.
I can’t wait to watch what other barriers she will break, because going against Trump’s America and pushing back against his bullying takes massive bravery.
She is incredible and a glowing reminder that te future of Democracy lies in a necessary shift to the Left, not with the alt-right or complacent middle-of-the-road excuses. Until her presidency, I had never felt pride for that side of my ancestry. And now I'm honored to share regularly online and in person with new people that I'm a 3rd Generation Mexican-American 🇺🇸💚🤍❤️🇲🇽
and he confirmed this call, Sheinbaum mi amor ❤️🧡
