Republicans Want to Make Hating Trump a Mental Illness
We are rapidly digressing into fascism...
In Minnesota, Republican lawmakers are up to something new: trying to classify disliking Trump as a mental illness. You can’t make this up!
As much as I laughed at this bill, it is, in reality, giving us a great insight as to what Republican lawmakers are thinking and how they intend to operate for the next four years. First, it starts as coining disliking Trump as a “mental illness”; then they graduate to trying to do the same to marginalized communities - LGBTQIA+ folks, people with disabilities, and more.
The downhill trend…
Republican lawmakers in Kentucky just passed a bill that protects child conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ youth. The bill also outlaws Medicaid funds to pay for gender-affirming healthcare for trans-Kentucky residents. Conversion therapy is scientifically discredited and has been proven over decades to be ineffective. The Supreme Court is slated to take up a bill challenging conversion therapy, but given the super MAGA majority SCOTUS, don’t expect good news from this when the ruling comes out.
A relatively new Utah bill is also planning on banning Pride flags in public schools but allowing Nazi flags for “educational purposes.”
Mississippi just tried to legalize deploying bounty hunters to “assist” them with rounding up undocumented immigrants for a reward of $1,000. Thank god it didn’t pass.
Fueling the fire…
About five days ago, the United States was added to the global human rights watch list, alongside countries like Argentina and Germany, who are also teetering on a very fine line of falling into fascism.
Donald Trump isn’t even pretending to go after undocumented immigrants anymore - a white man with a green card was just reportedly stripped naked and interrogated by ICE for hours after coming back from a Europe trip. Not to mention Mahmoud Khalil’s unlawful detention for daring to advocate for his people enduring a genocide funded by American tax dollars.
Trump VS Hitler…
When we think of Hitler, we think of his persecution against Europe’s Jewish population - but in fact, he went after anyone who did not fit his eugenic fantasy. From people with disabilities to people in the LGBTQIA+ communities and even leftists, they all suffered from his genocide. Of the 11 million victims of the Holocaust, about 5 million (give or take) were non-Jewish victims from Romani men, women, children, Jehovah’s Witnesses, men accused of being LGBTQ, and many more.
This is where it starts: the normalization of alienating the most vulnerable. It begins with scapegoating, with the labeling of dissent as “mental illness,” or with banning Pride flags while sanctioning hate symbols. It evolves into breaking laws and eroding civil rights, such as the stripping of green card holders’ rights. And once this becomes normalized, history shows us that the consequences can be unimaginable. Yes, it's hard to imagine, but given America’s history of Indigenous genocide, slavery, and internment camps, it’s tragically not unthinkable.
As much as it may seem extreme to compare something as stupid as “Trump derangement syndrome” to Hilter’s Holocaust, it all starts somewhere. Criticizing Donald Trump does not make you mentally ill; it makes you someone who has opinions.
It makes you human.
We can debate whether this newfound MAGA conservative movement is a cult or not. Still, one thing is undeniably true - they are forcing their regressive beliefs onto everyone, no matter what you believe in. By the end of Trump’s presidency, I’m not even sure if you could say we are the “Land of the Free” that exists in America, at least not in deep red southern states like Louisiana and Mississippi.
But there’s hope…
I’m not sharing this to depress or dishearten you. I’m sharing this because we must understand the gravity of what is happening. Once upon a time, my father came to America from Iran with a dream: to obtain a college degree and build a stable, prosperous life. After the Islamic Revolution, he had to stay in the U.S. because no one in Iran would hire a foreign-educated graduate. The dream my father chased is still alive for millions of immigrants, diaspora communities, and dreamers worldwide.
We cannot give up on this dream. We are a country built on resilience that has fought to overcome injustice before, and I have no doubt we can rise to the occasion again.
But to fight back effectively, we must first understand the threats we face. Knowledge is power. We need to stay vigilant and united because only then can we safeguard our rights and our future.
In conclusion…
As we watch these alarming trends unfold across the country, it’s clear that we’re not just fighting for policies; we’re fighting for the very soul of our nation. The actions we see today—from criminalizing dissent to attacking marginalized communities—are eerily reminiscent of history's darkest times. But we cannot afford to be passive observers. Now more than ever, we must stand united in defense of our freedoms, values, and humanity.
We cannot afford to sit idly by while history threatens to repeat itself. My father chased the dream worth fighting for—one that ensures a future where liberty and equality are not just ideals but lived realities for all.
The struggle is far from over, but if we fight back with courage and conviction, we can undoubtedly overcome these dark days and create a brighter future for future generations.

Points to leveraging conservatorship in court systems on dissidents if passed...
Not likely for imprisonment, but as the sneak label, that is advertised as "mental illness"... destroying access to services, jobs and freedom of choice...
The solution is community, and having multiple people at the ready to defend your history of mental stability (have the counter case ready)
I wish none of this was reality. Thank you for putting this ridiculous proposal into historical context. Maybe just maybe your voice will reach the ears of people outside of the echo chamber and influence their views.
Keep speaking up and speaking out. We need everyone together on this fight to save our country.
