Billionaires just got something they dream about in their wildest fantasies: $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for the cost of cutting about $1 trillion from Medicaid and other social safety net programs.
This is just the beginning.
What the Fuck Happened Last Night?!
Republicans came together, except for Thomas Massie of Kentucky, and voted to pass their proposed budget bill. The vote passed 217-215 and is now headed to the Senate, then the President’s desk. Here’s what the bill entails:
4.2 trillion dollar tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, while the wealth divide continues to grow and the middle class decimates. Half of America lives paycheck to paycheck, 80% of Americans have debt, and 26 million Americans live without insurance. The first thing they did was give trillions of dollars to the wealthiest population of America.
About $1 trillion was cut from Medicaid, which covers a little over 79 million people in the US. The most vulnerable populations of our society are enrolled in Medicaid, including people with disabilities, young pregnant women, houseless, recently unemployed, and many others. Cutting Medicaid will make the poor poorer and desperate for healthcare, something that is a human right in almost every other country.
Huge cuts to food stamps, which about 42.1 million people in the US rely on to put food on their tables. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) getting cut means more people in our vulnerable communities, including children, will starve.
Affordable housing cuts will make it even more complex than it already is for Gen Z and millennials to become homeowners and grow generational wealth.
To put it simply, we are cooked chat.
There’s still a little hope left…
As my mentor Qasim Rashid eloquently put it in his latest Substack masterpiece, this bill is not law yet. CALL YOUR SENATORS AND MAKE A BIG STINK ABOUT THIS BILL! Qasim highlighted how you can reach out to your Senator below:
📞 Call your senators today—Republican or Democrat. Demand that they vote NO. You can find their contact information here: Senate Directory
Script to Use When Calling Your Senators
"Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I am a constituent from [Your City/State]. I am calling to demand that Senator [Last Name] vote NO on the House bill that cuts Medicaid and food assistance while giving $4.5 trillion in tax breaks to billionaires. This bill will take healthcare away from millions of Americans, increase child hunger, and devastate working families—just so the wealthiest corporations can pay even less in taxes. This is unacceptable. I urge you to publicly oppose this bill and commit to voting against it. Please do the right thing and stand with the people you were elected to serve. Thank you."
Remember — Members of Congress are required to document the numbers of calls they get and the issues they get called about.
Wrapping it up…
This bill represents a stark prioritization of the wealthiest Americans over the well-being of the most vulnerable populations in the country.
With $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, the government is making it even harder for working-class families, the elderly, and those struggling with poverty to thrive. The cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, and affordable housing will only deepen the divide and hurt millions who rely on these vital safety nets.
However, this fight is far from over. The bill still has to pass through the Senate and the President’s desk, and there’s a chance to change the outcome. We must raise our voices, call our senators, and demand they stand with the people—not the billionaires.
The time to act is now, and it’s up to each of us to stand for our country's future and the dignity of every individual in it.
who are our elected officials that would allow something like this to happen let alone endorse it? Shameful
This is just insane....it's what happens when you have an oligarchy and political parties that are so brazenly pro-corporate and only care about their wealth.
