The UK and EU Are Going to Fight Trump Head-On
The “free and open trade” declaration will be catastrophic for Trump and his administration
A leaked draft to POLITICO shows that the European Union, along with Britain are planning to sign a formal declaration against Trump’s tariffs. This bold move promises “free and open trade” against Donald Trump’s tariff agenda.
The memo vows a “new strategic partnership” between London and Brussels, as the U.K. Government is continuing negotiations with the Trump administration to try to get a work around from the U.S. president’s new tariffs.
Officials are also negotiating the agreements between the U.K. And EU regarding defense and security, fishing and energy, and a “common understanding” of the topics that will be covered by the Brexit reset negotiations this year.
In addition to Trump’s tariffs, the leaked memo also covers topics like Ukraine’s invasion, the situation in the Middle East, as well as the influx of immigration.
Both parties have pledged the following:
…Unwavering commitment to providing political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military and diplomatic” support for Kyiv and also assert their “commitment to securing a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and [a] surge in humanitarian aid.
They also have a section recommitting both parties to support the UN charter, European Convention on Human Rights, and other international agreements.
The summit is slated to happen on May 19 and it will be hosted by the U.K.. It is expected to be the next major chapter in prime minister’s pledge to overhaul relations with the EU.
How Trump will react to this will still be determined, but it seems like Europe is turning a new chapter, one that does not see America as much of a close ally anymore. With America continuing to foster more and more enemies, while simultaneously distancing allies, the long lasting damages of this is still unknown.
In my opinion, Trump has to know how unpopular his tariffs are. Not just domestically, but globally as well, or at least one would hope.
This leaked memo makes one thing clear: the European Union and the United Kingdom are no longer waiting for Washington to lead. As global crises mount—from Gaza to Kyiv to trade wars—Europe is signaling a desire to chart a more independent course, one rooted in cooperation, mutual interests, and multilateralism.
Whether Trump acknowledges the consequences of his tariff agenda or doubles down remains to be seen. But if this declaration holds, it could mark the beginning of a long-term realignment—one where America’s closest allies look elsewhere for leadership, stability, and partnership.
