My thought is that Mamdani has thoroughly studied every existing law, regulation and rule at local and state levels and has mapped the existing routes through the maze, by areas of need and likelihood of budgetary support. This is, I’m almost sorry to say, a pretty good job for AI. Basic model training can provide basic probability analysis that one chosen approach could be more effective and/or affordable.
But I don’t have to explain this to him, my knowledge is limited to a few years I put into a team that was developing a medically specific system used to evaluate paid insurance claims and build a predictive cost model, 20+ years ago. We had the neural nets for the counts and stats but always dreamed of having LLMs sophisticated enough to understand and create a data interpretation of handwritten MD’s notes so that information could go into the mix, but read that notoriously awful penmanship? They were dragged kicking and screaming to the 21st century of keyboards and the like, and were paid by Medicare to do it, so now it’s all there to enrich the capacity of the models, when the two can be combined. The city has to actually deal with a much more fragmented collection of data and historical information. Citizen input is important right up front and he’s really good at that.
I wish him and the very nice people of NYC all the success in the world. If anyone can do even part of what he wants to do, they get into the history books and PoliSci PhD programs.
