Zohran Mamdani Singled out a Landlord Who Just Agreed to Forgive Back Rent to More Than 5,000 Apartments
Over 5,000 mostly rent-stabilized households across New York City could finally get a fresh start after their new landlord agreed to wipe out millions of dollars in unpaid rent accumulated under the buildings’ previous owner.
Summit Properties, which purchased a 93-building portfolio from bankrupt landlord Pinnacle Group earlier this year, announced that tenants who stay current on their rent will no longer be pursued for past-due rent. The decision follows years of organizing by the Union of Pinnacle Tenants, whose members say they withheld rent because of dangerous living conditions, including collapsing ceilings, lack of heat and hot water, broken doors, and repeated utility outages.
The portfolio became one of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s first major housing battles after the city intervened in the bankruptcy proceedings over nearly $13 million in unpaid taxes and fines. While the city failed to stop the sale, tenant advocates say pressure from residents and local officials helped secure Summit's commitment to invest $30 million in repairs and address thousands of housing code violations.
Although Summit says it has fixed more than 3,500 violations since taking over, inspections have uncovered thousands of additional unresolved issues, highlighting the decades of neglect many tenants say they have endured.
For thousands of New Yorkers living in rent-stabilized housing, the rent forgiveness agreement represents both financial relief and a rare victory for organized tenant activism against corporate landlords. While significant repairs are still needed, the decision to erase millions in rent debt demonstrates the power of organized tenant advocacy and could serve as a model for how cities protect renters when large housing portfolios change hands. The next test will be whether these promises translate into lasting improvements for the people who call these buildings home.

Keep holding the fat cats accountable, Mayor. 👏🏽
Promises made, promises kept. What an astonishing concept!
