It's always interesting what we're told is impossible by the people who benefit from us thinking that. If they won't let down the ladder so that everyone can partake in the American Dream, then let it be yanked down from their hands by a united and exhausted electorate. Mamdani's taxes are a beautiful first step. Let the rest of the world follow suit.

Have we finally reached a tipping point? For too long the masses have been conditioned to punch down, to blame immigrants et al for all their woes while never looking up to see who is really robbing them. They need to redirect the pitchforks and go after the true freeloaders.

British Columbia Canada has had an empty homes tax for the last 3 or 4 years. The provincial government did this as we had limited vacancy for rentals. Its working here.

Not eligible. Born outside the US-naturalized citizen. Senator someday however, yes, but not until NY gets three terms of goodness.

I'm so glad I voted for Mamdani. It's about damned time the rich start paying their fair share.

Now, there's a man with a titanium spine and balls of steel. Take note, politicians!

Not quite the same but the province of British Columbia in Canada has something similar for second homes. Vancouver is also struggling with housing for people who actually live there and then entire condo buildings and neighborhoods sitting empty. https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/speculation-vacancy-tax

All States should be taxing Big Businesses and billionaires. Its our moneys since they dont pay their share.

There just might be a whole lot of residents of Dubai more than willing to buy the billionaire apartments in NYC just because they are out of range of Iranian drones.

The problem with Florida is that it’s Florida.

I’m curious. Will this tax work or the avoiders find new tactics?

Taxing the rich is always cat-and-mouse and certainly it won't reap every dollar it should, but since the overall calculus still benefits the wealthy investors it will net some money- more than they were paying before.

In NYC and elsewhere on the Food Chain it is the mice that have proven their mastery at colonization, of calculus and many other survival skills. Cats are mostly looked after and coddled, not unlike the windfall wealthy and their Wealth Management Portfolio hirelings at Wells Fargo....
